A chiropractor can treat headaches and migraines using a variety of techniques, including spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapies, and lifestyle changes:
Spinal manipulation
Also known as chiropractic adjustments, this technique involves applying gentle force to a joint in the spine to improve function and reduce stress. It can be as effective as preventive medications for migraines.
Soft tissue therapies
These can include massage, taping, or manual resistance techniques to address issues with muscles, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues. Massage can involve kneading joints and muscles, or myofascial release massage that targets the membranes that support muscles. Trigger point therapies can also be used to target tense areas within muscles.
Lifestyle changes
Chiropractors may recommend changes to diet, such as adding B complex vitamins, and avoiding heavy exercise in favor of walking and low impact aerobics. They may also offer advice on posture, ergonomics, and relaxation techniques to help relieve tension in the neck and upper back.
